Can taste and smell disorders be treated?

Depending on the results of your tests and history of your smell and taste problem, a treatment plan can, in many cases, be developed. Disorders of the nasal cavity may be readily treatable with medication or surgery; for example, allergic rhinitis, polyps or sinusitis.

Medications contributing to smell and taste loss may be withdrawn or altered in dosage, but only after consultation with the prescribing physician. Discovering that the disorder is a result of head trauma, the lingering effects of a viral infection, or merely part of the aging process can help to reduce anxiety and worry. In ten to fifteen percent of head trauma and viral infection, smell and taste loss can improve over time, usually three to six months.

There is currently no medication proven to be effective in treating smell or taste loss. However, some people with reduced smell can benefit from eating warm foods, flavor enhanced foods, and stronger flavored or spicier foods.
