Pet Bird Chat Rooms/Channels
IRC is known to be addictive. It may also be hazardous to your real
world social life. Use at your own risk!
Check out this list of pet bird folks that you'll meet
on these IRC channels.
Hello pet bird owners!
You want to talk with other folks about pet birds in real-time? Here is the
place to start. There are quite a few chat channels, rooms, and methods to
chat over the Internet.
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channels
IRC is the most flexible and powerful way to chat online. It is all text
based. As well as chatting, you can send private messages to each other,
exchange pictures of your birds and other files, and get fancy by using colors.
However, IRC does have it's problems. It is a very public forum. Folks use
tricks to mass advertize less than desirable channels and web sites. On many
IRC networks, your computer's IP address can be obtained and your computer
could be attacked. There are exceptions to this and they are noted below.
But, IRC is not all bad. It is still a good way to comunicate. There are a
lot of channels availible to chat on. For info on how to get to an IRC
network check out my IRC info page.
- #PetBirds
- Has now reopened!

- irc.another.net
- Notes
- In my opinion, AnotherNet is the safest IRC network to chat on. Sex
channels are not allowed. It offers some online games like Acromania
and others. The IRC operators do care and are active in keeping it a
safe place. No mass advertising is allowed and many mechanisms have
been put in place to prevent it. Your computer's IP address is hidden
for added security. AnotherNet allows nick and channel registeration.
Plus you can leave memos to your friends if they are not online but
registered members.
AnotherNet now offers 30 hours a month for FREE. However, there is a fee
for unlimited access and channel registration privileges. One must first
register on their web site before connecting to the IRC netowrk. For
more details check out their web site at
http://www.another.net/.

where I normally hang out.
- #parrot_paradise (verified 8/6/99)
- Best chance to find people between 8pm-10pm CT.
- Servers
- irc.dal.net
- dragon.dal.net
- phoenix.tx.us.dal.net
- Notes
- This is a very popular IRC network. It provides for channel and nickname
registeration and fairly good protection. You can also leave memos for
friends. However it is easy to obtain a computer's IP address. There are
many mass advertisers here as well. DALnet provides Canadian and Europian
IRC servers. Netsplits often occur which can leave channels vulnerable.
Also at peak times, tine lag between IRC servers can be very annoying
making real time chatting slow and difficult if the folks on a channel
are spread out on many servers.
- #Budgie-Chat
(verified 8/6/99)

- Servers
- lowell.ma.us.undernet.org
(Port 6665 or 6669 are the best ones to use)
- dallas.tx.us.undernet.org
- Notes
- Undernet is one of the first organized IRC networks. They were first
to provided channel registration and limited protection. Nicknames,
howerver, are not protected. They provide Canadian, Europian, Asian,
and Australian IRC servers. However it is easy to obtain a computer's
IP address. There are many mass advertisers here as well. Netsplits
often occur which can leave channels vulnerable. Also at peak times,
tine lag between IRC servers can be very annoying and making real time
chatting slow and difficult if the folks on a channel are spread out
on many servers.

Chats via the Web
Web based chats are the simplest and quickest way to start chatting. Usually,
all you need is a web browser that supports Java. It provides good identity
protection. However chatting can be sluggish, may involve constant page
refreshing, and not as convenient as IRC based chats.
Please send me names and URLs for Web based chat areas. Thanks.
